From province to house number, learn what each component means and how the same address reads in Chinese, pinyin, and English.

Start with the direction

Chinese address text generally runs from the largest location to the smallest. English address lines generally begin with the most specific location and work outward. Preserve the same components when changing the order.

The parts of a mainland Chinese address

A typical urban address contains a province or municipality, city, district, street, and house number. A delivery can also need a building, floor, room, and recipient. Rural addresses may use a county, township, or village instead of the same urban sequence. The UPU China addressing sheet includes both urban and rural layouts.

A province field and a city field can share the same name for a municipality such as Beijing or Shanghai. In a complete address, write that municipality once instead of mechanically joining identical field values.

Chinese order: large area to specific location

Read this teaching example from left to right. Guangdong is the province, Guangzhou is the city, Tianhe is the district, Chunfeng is the road, and 82 is the house number. The postcode is a separate routing element, not part of the street name.

ILLUSTRATIVE ADDRESS

广东省广州市天河区春风路82号

Guangdong Sheng → Guangzhou Shi → Tianhe Qu → Chunfeng Lu → 82 Hao

Pinyin transcribes the Chinese pronunciation using Latin letters. In this example, it retains both the geographical order and the administrative terms. It is different from an English rendering that uses labels such as Road or District.

English order: specific location to large area

For a compact English version, put the house number before the street name, followed by district, city, province where applicable, postcode, and country. Keep the place names recognizable: Chunfeng remains Chunfeng, while Lu becomes Road.

THE SAME COMPONENTS IN ENGLISH

No. 82 Chunfeng Road, Tianhe District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, 510000, China

For a municipality, omit the repeated province component:

北京市朝阳区明月路28号

No. 28 Mingyue Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing, 100000, China

These invented examples show formatting, not verified delivery premises. Our generator provides the Chinese line, full pinyin, English line, and separate components so you can compare them.

A compact address and a postal label serve different layouts

A web form may separate the street, city, province, and postal code into fields. An envelope may arrange the same information across several lines. In the UPU's China examples, the postcode appears before the province or municipality on its address line. For international mail, make the destination country clear in a language understood internationally.

If a real address includes a room, floor, or building, keep those details rather than dropping them to fit our simplified examples. Use the recipient's confirmed spelling and your carrier's requested layout. The generator includes sample recipient names in Chinese and pinyin, plus unverified eleven digit phone numbers for form testing. These are generated independently of the address and may coincide with real people or subscribers. It does not create apartment information.

Mapping an address into an online form

  • Address lines: retain the street and house number, plus any real unit or building details the recipient supplies.
  • City and province: use their matching fields. A municipality may need to appear in both dropdowns even though it appears once in the complete address.
  • District: use a district field if available, or preserve the district in an address line according to the form's instructions.
  • Postal code: keep all six digits as text and confirm the code for a real delivery.

Forms vary. If a form rejects an otherwise complete address, inspect the required fields and supported destination format rather than changing a real address into invented details. A formatting example cannot promise acceptance by every platform.
