Hong Kong Postal Code: What Should You Enter?

Hong Kong has no local postal code or ZIP code system: Hongkong Post says you may leave the field blank or try 000, 0000, 000000 or HKG. The code 999077 is associated with mail from mainland China to Hong Kong; use it only when your platform or carrier requires it.

Does Hong Kong have a postal code?

No. Hong Kong does not operate a local postcode system. A Hong Kong ZIP code is therefore not a missing number that you need to look up for each district. “Postal code”, “postcode” and “ZIP code” may be different labels for the same field on an international website.

Hongkong Post’s official explanation confirms the absence of a postcode system and gives the form suggestions summarized above. An entry that passes a website’s validation is not proof of a real local postcode or a deliverable address.

What to enter in the postal code field

Use the three situations at the top of this page to choose your next step. Select Hong Kong as the destination before entering an address; a form configured for another destination may apply an unsuitable postal code rule.

For a compulsory field, the official suggestions are values you may try, not a promise that every website accepts them. A field allowing letters may accept HKG, while a numeric field cannot. Choose a listed zero value only if its length fits the field. If the platform provides its own Hong Kong instructions, follow those instead.

Keep postal codes as text when saving a form test or spreadsheet, so leading zeros remain intact. For a real order, also check the recipient’s full address and the carrier’s service coverage. Do not replace the destination with another country or region just to pass validation.

Where 999077 comes from

A 2018 South China Morning Post report identifies 999077 with mail sent from mainland China to Hong Kong and describes it as rarely used in local postage. This is a different context from Hongkong Post operating a district-by-district postcode system.

If a website displays 999077, treat it as that website’s entry for the destination and check its instructions. Its appearance does not establish a universal rule for online shops, couriers or all cross-border shipments. We have not verified a general reason why shopping platforms might prefill it, so this guide does not attribute one to every platform.

What if the form rejects your postal code?

It only accepts five digits

Check that the destination is Hong Kong, then look for destination-specific help or an optional “no postal code” setting. Hongkong Post’s published list does not include the five-digit value 00000. Do not describe it as an official Hong Kong postcode, and do not borrow a real ZIP code from a different destination. If the website requires exactly five digits and gives no Hong Kong instructions, ask its support which value it accepts before placing a real order.

It only accepts 999077

If the platform explicitly instructs you to use 999077 for a Hong Kong destination, follow that instruction and check the address shown in the order summary. That is a requirement of the platform’s form; it does not make the number a local Hong Kong postal code.

It still says “invalid postal code”

Recheck the destination selection, remove accidental spaces, and compare the required character type and length with your entry. If the official suggestions do not fit or are rejected, stop guessing and use the platform’s help channel. Include the destination and error message, without posting a private address publicly.

Hong Kong address format

For an English postal address, start with the recipient, then the flat or room and floor, building, street number and name, district, and region. Include a block, tower, estate or village when it belongs to the established address. Hongkong Post’s addressing guide shows the component order.

Chinese addresses generally run from the larger area toward the building and unit. This is a change in geographic order, not a rule to reverse every word. In English, 8/F means the eighth floor, Flat A identifies the unit, and Block B or Tower B may identify a building within a development. Use the building’s established English name, including an estate name if applicable, rather than translating its name yourself.

For a real shipment, copy the recipient’s established address and follow the carrier’s label requirements. Frequently asked questions

How many digits is a Hong Kong postal code?

There is no local postcode system, so Hong Kong addresses have no standard postcode length. A website’s required number of digits is its form rule, not a Hong Kong postal standard.

Is Hong Kong’s postal code 999077?

Not as a universal local postcode. The number is associated with mail from mainland China to Hong Kong. Use it when your platform or carrier specifically requires it for that destination.

What should I enter for Hong Kong on Taobao?

Select the correct Hong Kong destination and follow the current checkout or delivery service instructions. If that flow explicitly requires or supplies 999077, use it there. We have not verified a current rule covering every Taobao shipping option, so this guide does not prescribe one value for all orders.

What postal code should I use when sending a parcel to Hong Kong?

Follow the selected carrier’s Hong Kong instructions. If the field is optional, leave it blank. If it is compulsory, use the carrier’s stated entry or ask for its accepted value; the carrier may apply rules different from a general website form.

Will entering 999077 guarantee that a parcel arrives?

No. A number that passes the form cannot guarantee delivery. Check the full recipient address, destination and service requirements with the carrier. A code does not replace the flat, building or other necessary address details.

Does Hong Kong have a ZIP code for each district?

No. Hong Kong has no local postcode system assigning a ZIP code to each district. Keep the district in the address field provided instead of inventing a district-level code.
